Chromium is one of the most important minerals for diabetics and those trying to lose weight as it is vital for the control of blood sugar.  It’s found in lots of scrummy food such as eggs, wholegrain bread and cheese.

Chromium is vital for the control of blood sugar levels. It helps prevent fatigue and hunger by encouraging muscles and organs to take up glucose from the blood when blood levels are too high. It also stimulates protein synthesis and helps increase muscle mass and bulk, helps the immune system and controls levels of cholesterol and fat in the blood.

Chromium works closely with insulin to boost the uptake of glucose by cells in the body. If chromium levels are too low insulin is blocked and blood glucose levels remain high.  That’s why it’s such an important nutrient for diabetics.  When blood sugar levels are out of control in people without diabetes it can cause weight gain leading to obesity and put you at risk of developing diabetes.  Get your blood sugar levels in control and you will find your body thanks you for it by remaining at a steady weight and having a constant stream of energy (no highs followed by lows).

A diet high in carbohydrates and high stress levels can cause an imbalance. Deficiency symptoms are hypoglycemia, diabetes, fatigue, mood swings, high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity.

Good sources of chromium are;

  • Egg yolk
  • Molasses
  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Beef
  • Cheese
  • Grape juice
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Wheat bran
  • Raw sugar
  • Rye bread
  • Honey
  • Old potatoes
  • Wheat germ
  • Green bell pepper

My most popular recipe so far.  Turkey pasta bake is full of flavour, this pasta dish is low in saturated fat and an excellent source of quality protein.  It’ll keep you full for ages and requires no accompaniments.  I love this dish as an alternative to the traditional Sunday roast.  The recipe can be found on my Recipes page.
