Every winter I find myself resorting to DVD’s in order to keep fit.  I don’t run in the dark as it’s no fun so my running is constrained to the weekends.  I think home workouts do a great job of keeping me active and supple during these dark months.

This year I have discovered Davina’s Body Buff workouts and I love them.  There are 3 workouts on the DVD – Buff Cardio, Buff Boxing and Buff Legs & Core but it’s so much more too.  The Buff Cardio routine lasts about 30 mins but has another 15 mins of killer arm work with weights – add the warm up and cooldown to the program and you’re talking about 1:15 workout!  The Buff Boxing is incredibly good fun and has 15 mins of tough ab work.  I have to admit I have not done the Buff Legs & Core yet as my legs get a workout every day from cycling to work and back twice and running at the weekend.

Davina as ever is great to follow and really gets into the workouts – and her abs – it’s keeps me going –  trying to get abs like that!  You can buy Body Buff from Amazon for £12.93 or as I did from iTunes for just £7.99.

There aren’t many things I like about being back in the UK to be honest but cycling to work is one of them.  I bought my bike ‘Matilda’ on eBay for £9.99 and fell in love with her immediately.  She is a Raleigh and was tucked away in a garage somewhere enjoying her retirement when I plucked her out and spruced her up with a set of bike lights and a lock.  We haven’t looked back since!

I live in the centre of busy city in an apartment block with bike storage that is about 1 mile away from my work – all on cycle paths.  It takes me 15 mins from door to desk which includes a stop off in the loos at work to tidy my hair and remove my waterproofs.  I can come home for lunch which is a luxury I’ve never known in my working life until now.

To summarise why I love Matilda:

  • I arrive at work/home refreshed rather than drained
  • She costs nothing to run & has next to no impact on the environment
  • I get some ‘free’ exercise

I used to drive to work and back.  In the winter with the dark evenings, I would arrive home with very tired eyes, generally annoyed and frustrated with all the other cars that were in my way.  If someone had parked in my allocated parking spot they’d better be ready for a fight!  But riding to work and back is a pleasure, I feel the office being blown away from my face and I leave the stress at the office door.  No petrol costs, no parking costs and because I service her myself, next to no running costs at all.  The ‘free’ exercise I mentioned above is because I feel it’s not a planned exercise ‘session’ and therefore is free!

Here’s my advice for aspiring commuters:

  • Buy some cycle clips
  • Buy some waterproof clothing
  • Buy a wooly hat that covers your ears
  • Don’t leave your lights in your bag and forget to put them on
  • People on mobile phones may go off in any direction without notice
  • Watch out for dogs on stretchy leads
  • Use lip balm & moisturiser
  • Snot can be a problem – so learn how to snot rocket without getting it on your clothes!

Zendre is a beautiful, simple goal tracking application for the iPhone. You set a resolution and choose an end date if you want one and then track your progress.

With Zendre. the idea is very simple and I like it! You can set a goal like ‘drink 5 glasses of water a day’ and then click the + symbol each time you drink one. The application then tells you how near to your goal you are. You could set a goal of running 10 kilometres a week or taking 20 minutes a day as ‘you’ time.

Perfect, simple and good looking!

I devised this 14 day healthy eating plan when a client asked for a simple menu – not one that required hours in the kitchen and fancy ingredients.  So the meals in this plan are deliberately simple but still incredibly nutritious.

I love apples!  I love raw apples, apple juice, baked apples, apple peal and apple sauce with my pork – hmmmm.  Apples are packed full of nutrients, taste delicious and are versatile – the perfect food!  They can help us to lose weight, to slow down the effects of aging, reduce cholesterol levels and can even help to prevent cancer.  Eating one a day will give you tonnes of vitamins and minerals as well as a healthy dose of fibre.

An apple contains approximately 81 calories (depending on it’s size) and 3.7g of fibre.  One of the nutrients that is really good for us is pectin.  Pectin is found in whole apples, apple juices and is also available in supplement form. It is a soluble fibre that binds with fat in the intestines to prevent it from being absorbed into the blood stream. There are several supplements on the market which suggest it can be used to aid weight loss.
